Hope Estheim is a 14 year-old, silver-haired boy who is a Cocoon exile at the start of the game. A few days before the start of the game, he and his mother, Nora, were visiting the town of Bodhum on vacation. However, they were caught up in the Purge and exiled to Pulse. Under Snow's leadership, Nora joins the resistance in the Hanging Edge and falls to her death during the battle while trying to protect Hope and after saving Snow's life. Angered by the death of his mother and Snow's role in it, Hope and Oerba Dia Vanille, a fellow exile, follow Snow to the Pulse Vestige.
